About Maury

Well, I thought it would be nice for me to provide a little bit of information about myself and I would like to have this up early on in the blog so here goes.

I was born and raised at Christina Lake, BC (West Kootenays), one of the most beautiful areas of the province for sure. Grew up mostly outside, in the lake, on the ski hill at Red Mountain (best hill ever), and on motorcycles. I missed out on malls and big movie theatres but I got enough of that later on so I think I was pretty lucky to grow up there.

Following high school I moved to Vancouver, well Burnaby actually, and lived in the dorms and went to Simon Fraser University where my BSc in Kinesiology. I did Kinesiology mostly out of interest rather than seeing a profession at the end of. However, I was fortunate enough to get on with Nike Canada following graduation where I worked in retail marketing for almost 5 years. Nike was a tonne of fun with a tonne of opportunities and experiences. While at Nike I started taking some business classes as my interests were  growing based on the roles I was seeing there. This led to me deciding to leave Nike after four and a half years to pursue my MBA also at Simon Fraser University.

After the MBA I wanted to something different so I went to an IT start-up based out of Surrey that was focusing on home automation and media centre integration. The entrepreneurial environment was great exposure and I loved being around the technology and experts which I am sure in part explains my interest in electronic/computer toys and how to link them all together. While at the IT company I bought my first place, a condo downtown, and used a mortgage broker. It was about at this same time that I was starting to get a mild case of cabin fever and was missing the regular and frequent interaction with clients and other industry people that I had while at Nike. So, the conclusion I came to was that I would like a role in outside sales which took me to taking and writing the exam for my mortgage broker’s license.

From here I worked for two different mortgage banks. The first one had a niche in alternative lending which was one of the best experiences of my life professionally. In part to how they had you learn with no training wheels but also due to the hands on approach to a very involved process from beginning to end. From here I transitioned to a different mortgage bank that focused on prime residential business which was a nice compliment to alternative lending side which I came from.

So with rounded out experience and understanding the lending side of things I decided to do what my original intention was which was to go self-employed as an independent mortgage broker. If you are interested to know more about what I do and how l can help you or possibly someone you know see my website and click on the link “What is a mortgage broker?.
